- The park stands proud as a product of the Civilian Conservation Corps
Lake Greenwood is one of 16 state parks designed and constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal initiative that created important employment opportunities during the Great Depression. Several of the original structures built in the 1930s still stand today.
The state park features a couple of notable sites that commemorate the history and contributions of the CCC program. One is an interactive museum located inside the park’s Drummond Center. The other is an unfinished stone wall at the entrance of the park. It was left only half-completed because the CCC builders working on it were called to serve during World War II. Park officials later decided to leave the wall incomplete as a tribute to the workers who answered the call of duty.
